Minibus Compliance Course - Two-Part Course

Are you the person responsible for your school’s transport?

Have you ever received any formal training for this position or to help you in your job?

Castle’s Minibus Compliance Course was developed and written in consultation with regulator and specialist in this area, former Senior Traffic Commissioner for Great Britain, Beverley Bell and is delivered by highly experienced ADI driver trainers.

The law in this area is complex and not always easily understood by schools and their teaching staff, with severe penalties for non-compliance, as well as the risk to the safety of your pupils. It is therefore vital that your school gets it right.

Our ISBA, RoSPA and RAC approved bespoke courses are held at our dedicated training centre in Bicester, Oxfordshire as well as at convenient locations across the UK.

If you want to discuss our MCC courses or anything else, we are here to help.

Get in Touch

If you have not had any formal training for the important role of minibus administrator, this certified programme on minibus compliance and legislation provides you with an opportunity to share experiences with other school managers, gain essential but practical day to day understanding of your role, whilst developing and strengthening your understanding of all that is involved with your position.

The Minibus Compliance Course is aimed at anyone who is responsible for their school’s transport needs, covering all the things you need to know to give you a greater understanding of your role and responsibilities, and is delivered in two parts;

Part One - The one day classroom based course, covering four key areas;

  • The legal minefield: We guide you through the permits and licences which you operate under – depending on the status of your drivers and the type of school you work for including who has the responsibility for legal compliance
  • Vehicles: We look at the differences in driving a minibus and the challenges teacher-drivers face, best practice weekly and daily minibus checks and required safety inspections
  • Drivers: We cover what the driver’s responsibilities are as well as the schools and the penalties you and the school could face if you don’t fulfil them
  • The journey: Things you need to consider when planning journeys and emergency protocols.
  • At the end of the day you will be presented with a certificate of compliance, signed by your ADI trainer.

Part Two - The half-day Green Light Assessment

After attending MCC part one, your appointed school transport manager will have an on-site half day assessment from a highly qualified approved driving instructor with a follow up report on your school’s transport ‘safety system’. Following a successful visit you will receive certification of having passed your green Light Assessment.

Castle Driver Training a little bit of history

In developing our relationships with our schools, we were made aware of another area the schools were struggling with, and that was Driver Training for D1 and assessment days (also known as MiDAS). So in 2013, we formed Castle Driver Training. We set new standards in this area by having highly qualified ADI top grade Driver Trainers, in the latest model Ford Transit minibuses and very quickly, we were recording a pass rate that was near twice the national average.

We guide our candidates throughout the theory and practical tests which minimise the time the Bursar or School Business Manager previously had to spend with colleagues trying to coach them in an area they don't as standard have specialist knowledge of, and therefore the quality of coaching can be somewhat diminished. Because of the quality of our staff and service we are saving schools money on supply teachers costs as we train in half the time other companies take to deliver courses and because we are the only company to come to school to teach, this saves valuable time and cost for the candidates as well as twice the chance of passing first time! Today 1 in 10 people taking their D1 test is doing so with Castle, and we trained our 1,000th teacher in spring 2017.

If you want to discuss our MCC courses or anything else, we are here to help.

10 / 10 - This [MCC] course was quite easily the most useful session I've attended in 2 years of joining the education sector. Cliff & Chris are very knowledgeable and pitched the course perfectly.

Sarah Williams,
Christ College

'I really enjoyed the [MCC] course in Cardiff yesterday, it was very worthwhile. Cliff did say that if we needed any Section 19 Permits you could send some. Could I possibly have six please?

I ask because Cliff's warning that the DVSA were doing their rounds was very timely. I had a phone call at 7.30pm last night to say that the Police and a DVSA inspector had followed one of our minibuses back to School after their evening run and did a spot check. All OK apart from the fact that although the permit was in the bus it wasn’t on display – hence my request!

Kind regards
Sarah'

Steven Haigh,

Tom Farrell
